Southlake Carroll Boys Win Fifth Consecutive State Championship

 

Round Rock, TX – The Southlake Carroll boys cross country team won its fifth consecutive 6A state title Saturday morning at Old Settlers Park, defeating runner-up Austin Vandegrift by 20 points. It is not only the Dragons’ fifth straight state championship, but also the 14th consecutive year the boys have finished either first or second at the state meet.

The girls squad finished runner-up to Flower Mound for the second straight year.

“Words cannot describe how proud I am of our young men and women,” Southlake Carroll Head Coach Justin Leonard said. “It takes tremendous year-round dedication to succeed at our sport, and five straight titles for the boys is a testament to just how hard they work every single day.

“Our girls work just as hard, and finishing second to an outstanding Flower Mound team is no small feat. Our ladies have qualified for the state meet 27 years in a row. That level of consistency is only reached by working hard day in and day out”

In the varsity boys’ race, freshman Caden Leonard won the individual state title with a time of 15:00. Junior Blake Bullard finished fourth in 15:09, followed by seniors Jude Alvarez (14th, 15:25), Zach Troutman (19th, 15:30) and Ryan Van De Berghe (28th, 15:44). Juniors Griffin Cords (41st, 15:53) and Alex Severson (54th, 16:00) rounded out the Dragon competitors.

Junior Elizabeth Smits was the top Dragon runner in the girls’ race, finishing 10th overall with a time of 17:50. Senior Alexandra Walsh was next (11th, 17:53), followed by senior Sylvia Schwedler (35th, 18:29), junior Sarayu Veluri (37th, 18:32) and senior Charlotte Martin (48th, 18:44). Sophomore Vanessa Vezga (55th, 18:52) and senior Julia Gassett (96th, 19:29) were the Dragons’ final two finishers.

Dragons Win Boys & Girls Regional Championships

Sophomore Caden Leonard claims boys’ individual title

 

Lubbock, TX – The Southlake Carroll boys’ and girls’ cross country teams each won Region 1-6A cross country championships at Mae Simmons Park Tuesday morning. It is the sixth consecutive regional title for the boys, while the girls avenged last year’s second-place performance to finish atop the medal stand. Both Dragon teams qualified for the state meet.

It marks the 27th consecutive year the girls have qualified for the state meet, and the 14th straight year for the boys. The boys have won four consecutive state titles.

“I’m really proud of our young men and women,” Head Coach Justin Leonard said. “This is always such a tough region, and our runners rose to the challenge. The boys are excited to have the opportunity to defend their state championship again, and the girls are looking forward to competing for a state title of their own.”

Sophomore Caden Leonard won the individual boys’ title, crossing the finish line in 15:12. Senior Jude Alvarez finished 10th in 15:31, followed by junior Blake Bullard (13th, 15:41), senior Zach Troutman (16th, 15:46) and senior Ryan Van De Berghe (24th, 16:06). Juniors Alex Severson (36th, 16:15) and Griffin Cords (40th, 16:18) rounded out the Dragon runners.

In the girls’ race, senior Alexandra Walsh finished third overall with a time of 17:52, followed by junior Elizabeth Smits in fourth, with a time of 18:13. Sophomore Vanessa Vezga finished 17th in 18:46, followed by senior Charlotte Martin (20th, 18:50) and junior Sarayu Veluri (25th, 19:03). Seniors Sylvia Schwedler (28th, 19:06) and Julia Gassett (40th, 19:29) were the Dragons’ final two finishers.

The 6A state championship meet will be held in Round Rock on Saturday, Nov. 4.

Dragons Capture District 4-6A Championship

Leonard, Walsh win individual gold medals

 

SOUTHLAKE, Texas – The Southlake Carroll boys and girls cross country teams successfully defended their District 4-6A titles at Bob Jones Park on Thursday morning. It is the 14th consecutive district title for the boys, and the fifth in a row for the girls.

“I’m very proud of our young men and women,” Head Coach Justin Leonard said. “We work hard all year to prepare for the championship season, and district titles are the first step. We’re looking forward to carrying this momentum into regionals.”

In the varsity boys’ race, sophomore Caden Leonard won the individual district title with a time of 14:56. Senior Jude Alvarez finished second in 14:59, and junior Blake Bullard finished third in 15:12. Senior Zach Troutman finished fourth in 15:13, followed by junior Alex Severson (8th, 15:40), senior Ryan Van De Berghe (9th, 15:41) and junior Giffin Cords (11th, 15:50).

In the girls’ competition, senior Alexandra Walsh won the individual district title, finishing in 17:40. She was followed by junior Elizabeth Smits (5th, 18:06), sophomore Vanessa Vezga (7th, 18:15), junior Sarayu Veluri (9th, 18:24.4) and senior Charlotte Martin (10th, 18:24.6). Seniors Sylvia Schwedler (15th, 18:48) and Julia Gassett (28th, 19:51) were the Dragons’ other finishers.

In the final JV race of the season, Dragon boys finished one through five, leading Carroll to the district title. Senior Brady Golomb finished first in 16:03, followed by junior Ryan Krasinski (2nd, 16:21), senior Carter Haskell (3rd 16:32), junior Caleb Lo (4th, 16:33) and senior Michael Kovach (5th, 16:49). Also finishing in the top 10 were freshman Adhavan Palanivelrajan (7th, 16:51) and sophomore Michael Fuller (8th, 16:51).

In the girls JV race, junior Carmela Bell crossed the line first in 19:35, leading the Dragons to a second-place finish behind Northwest Nelson. Junior Gabriella Tesoriero finished fourth in 19:44, followed by sophomore Luna Gutierrez (6th, 19:59), senior Kylee Cusick (9th, 20:10), junior Mia Lay (11th, 20:19), senior Lucy Pettigrew (13th, 20:28) and senior Lauren Sims (15th, 20:35).

The Dragons now advance to the Region 1-6A meet in Lubbock on Oct. 24. The boys will be aiming for their sixth consecutive regional championship, and the girls will look to improve on their second-place finish from a year ago.

Dragons Sweep Nike South Invitational

Leonard wins boys’ gold; JV teams race at Reunion Run

 

THE WOODLANDS and DECATUR, Texas – The Southlake Carroll cross country teams ended their 2023 regular season by winning the boys’ and girls’ varsity elite championships at the Nike South Invitational in The Woodlands Saturday morning. Sophomore Caden Leonard took home the top individual honors, winning the boys’ race in 15:06.

“This was a great final tune-up before the district meet,” Southlake Carroll Head Coach Justin Leonard said. “We faced some of the best teams in the state today, and it was good for our boys and girls to see what it takes to come out on top.”

Senior Jude Alvarez finished third overall in the boys’ varsity elite race, with a time of 15:23. Senior Zach Troutman finished seventh in 15:27, followed by three juniors: Blake Bullard (10th, 15:31), Alex Severson (13th, 15:38) and Griffin Cords (14th, 15:41). Senior Ryan Van De Berghe rounded out the Dragons’ finishers (41st, 16:16).

The girls edged two-time defending state champion Flower Mound in the varsity elite race, led by junior Elizabeth Smits (10th, 18:12). She was followed by senior Alexandra Walsh (12th, 18:15), sophomore Vanessa Vezga (20th, 18:29), junior Sarayu Veluri (24th, 18:42) and senior Sylvia Schwedler (28th, 18:56). Seniors Charlotte Martin (35th, 19:01) and Julia Gassett (43rd, 19:15), as well as junior Gabriella Tesoriero (81st, 20:14), rounded out the Dragons’ runners.

The boys also won the regular varsity race, led by senior Carter Haskell’s fourth-place finish in 16:23. Sophomore Michael Fuller finished 11th in 16:37, followed by juniors Ryan Krasinski (16th, 16:43) and Caleb Lo (17th, 16:44), and senior Michael Kovach (38th, 17:03).

On the girls’ side, junior Carmela Bell led the way, finishing 12th (20:24). She was followed by seniors Kylee Cusick (28th, 20:50.3), Sophia Wilwayco (29th, 20:50.7), Lucy Pettigrew (56th, 21:34) and Lauren Sims (75th, 22:01).

Meanwhile, the JV teams competed at the Reunion Run in Decatur. The boys were led by Graysen Schick (26th, 17:31), Aidan Bedwell (31st, 17:43) and Jason McCarthy (33rd, 17:46). The top girls’ finishers were Ryann Flores (30th, 21:19.15), Megan Bergman (31st, 21:19.68) and Grace Rhoten (34th, 21:50).

The postseason begins on Thursday, Oct. 12, when the Dragons will host the District 4-6A meet at Bob Jones Park. The boys are seeking their fifth consecutive state championship, while the girls are looking to improve on last year’s runner-up finish at the state meet.

Dragon Cross Country Hosts Southlake Invitational

 

Southlake, TX – With the top Southlake Carroll cross country runners taking the weekend off from competition to prepare for next week’s Chile Pepper Festival at the University of Arkansas, the Dragons sent their next tier of runners to toe the line at the Southlake Invitational at Bob Jones Park on Saturday morning.

“Our young men and women ran hard today,” Dragons Head Coach Justin Leonard said. “We’ll be hosting the district meet here in a few weeks, so it was a good opportunity for some of our younger runners to get a feel for what this course is like in live competition.”

In the girls’ varsity elite race, Lucy Pettigrew led the way for the Dragons, finishing 42nd in 20:13. Lilah Gornell was next (51st, 20:38), followed by Ryann Flores (55th, 20:42), Megan Bergman (56th, 20:43) and Grace Rhoten (73rd, 21:20).

On the boys’ side, Grant Norgen was the Dragons’ top runner, finishing 45th in 16:25. He was followed by Adhavan Palanivelrajan (51st, 16:32), Claudio Auns (58th, 16:50), Dylan Torres (74th, 17:22) and Graysen Schick (76th, 17:27).

In the varsity open races, Grace McIlvain led the girls with a ninth-place finish in 21:27. Haley Badgett finished 19th (22:03), followed by Emma Whittle (28th, 22:32), Isabella Di Vincenzo (30th, 22:34) and Leighton Bowles (31st, 22:38).

Nikhel Kamalia paced the Dragons in the boys’ race with a time of 18:03, good for a 48th-place finish. He was followed by Alan Deng (53rd, 18:18), Armaan Dhillon (63rd, 18:31), Chase Mader (64th, 18:32) and Evan O’Donnell (65th, 18:33).

In JV action, Sophia Adams led the girls with a 37th-place finish, crossing the line in 24:49. Isabella Galvis was next (43rd, 25:06), followed by Amelia Greene (45th, 25:12), Areesha Hassan (51st, 25:36) and Linley Goldsmith (56th, 26:45).

On the boys’ side, Kai Speier led the way with a seventh-place finish and a time of 18:12. He was followed by Quentin Gourdon (17th, 18:51), Arnav Kakarala (26th, 19:17), Will Price (34th, 19:35) and German Vivanco (38th, 19:42).

While the Dragons varsity runners will return to action next Saturday in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the JV teams will compete in the Reunion Run in Decatur.

Carroll XC Stacks up Well with National Powerhouses

Dragon Boys Finish Fourth; Girls Eighth

 

NORCO, CA – Southlake Carroll’s top boys’ and girls’ cross country runners traveled to Southern California to compete against dozens of the top high school programs in the country at the three-mile Woodbridge XC Classic on Saturday evening. Both teams impressed on the national stage – the boys finished fourth in the top “sweepstakes” division, while the girls came in eighth.

“Our young men and women faced some of the strongest high school cross country teams in the U.S. tonight, and they proved they could compete with the best of the best,” Southlake Carroll Head Coach Justin Leonard said. “They rose to the challenge and raced well.”

Senior Jude Alvarez led the boys’ team with a time of 14:11, finishing 12th overall. Sophomore Caden Leonard finished 21st in 14:16, followed by junior Blake Bullard (41st, 14:31), junior Alex Severson (70th, 14:51) and senior Ryan Van de Berghe (72nd, 14:51). Seniors Zach Troutman (88th, 14:56) and Brady Golomb (151st, 15:20) rounded out the Dragons’ finishers.

In the girls’ “sweepstakes” race, senior Alexandra Walsh led the way with a time of 16:42, good for a 25th-place finish. Junior Elizabeth Smits finished 40th in 16:57, followed by junior Sarayu Veluri (87th, 17:36), senior Sylvia Schwedler (88th, 17:38), sophomore Vanessa Vezga (122nd, 18:04), and seniors Charlotte Martin (125th, 18:06) and Julia Gassett (129th, 18:11).

In the “rated” competition, junior Griffin Cords was the Dragons’ top finisher in 56th place with a time of 15:07. Sophomore Michael Fuller was next, finishing 73rd in 16:15, followed by seniors Carter Haskell (93rd, 15:31) and John Adam Kieda (114th, 15:38), juniors Caleb Lo (124th, 15:43) and Hudson Lowry (140th, 15:48), and senior Michael Kovach (182nd, 16:04).

On the girls’ side, junior Gabriella Tesoriero finished in 18:32, good for 76th place overall to lead the Dragons. Junior Mia Lay was next, finishing 126th in 19:09, followed by junior Carmella Bell (133rd, 19:11), senior Kylee Cusick (141st, 19:18) and junior Katie Hurrell (147th, 19:21). Seniors Sophia Wilwayco (161st, 19:37) and Lauren Sims (173rd, 19:49) rounded out the Dragons finishers.

The Dragons’ top runners will return to action on Saturday, September 30, at the University of Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville.

Southlake Carroll XC Runs in Paschal Invitational

Dragon Boys Finish Fifth; Girls Take Sixth

 

FORT WORTH, TX – With the top 28 Southlake Carroll runners competing at the Woodbridge XC Classic in Norco, Ca., this weekend, the next generation of Dragons toed the line at the Paschal Invitational in Fort Worth. The boys finished fifth in the varsity race, while the girls came in sixth.

“This was a good opportunity for some of our less-experienced runners to get a taste of varsity competition,” Southlake Carroll Head Coach Justin Leonard said. “It’s a tough course, and I’m proud of how they attacked it.”

In the varsity boys’ race, Ryan Krasinski paced the Dragons with a time of 17:04, good for a 17th-place finish. Grant Norgart finished 28th in 17:31, followed by Jett Jones (31st, 17:37), Claudio Auns (38th, 17:51) and Adhavan Palanivelrajan (40th, 17:57).

Lucy Pettigrew was the Dragons’ top runner in the girls’ varsity race, finishing 24th with a time of 21:20. Ryann Flores finished 39th in 21:50, followed by Lilah Gornell (42nd, 22:04), Megan Berman (46th, 22:32) and Ashley Cusick (47th, 22:39).

The Dragons finished second in the JV girls’ race, led by Quinn Salstrand, who finished fourth overall with a time of 22:54. Sophie Spurlock finished seventh in 23:09, followed by Haley Badgett (8th, 23:16), Akshita Kasthuri (13th, 23:42) and Annalise Bell (14th, 23:43).

The boys JV team finished sixth, led by Colin Van de Berghe, who finished 16th overall in 19:19. Andrew Wang finished 17th in 19:20, followed by Armaan Dhillon (25th, 19:44), Rayan Behjoo (27th, 19:50) and Hassan Saadi (29th, 19:57).

The Dragons will return to action next Saturday morning, when they host the Southlake Invitational at Bob Jones Park.

Dragons Run at Marcus Coach T Invitational

 

Denton, TX – With the top Southlake Carroll boys and girls cross country runners taking the weekend off from competition to prepare for an upcoming national meet in California, the Dragons sent their JV teams to North Lakes Park in Denton for the Marcus Coach T Invitational on Saturday morning.

“This meet always attracts some of the top teams in the area, and it was a good opportunity for some of our younger runners to step up in competition,” Head Coach Justin Leonard said. “The course was laid out a bit differently from previous years, and while the results weren’t what we’re used to, I’m proud of how we competed.”

In the varsity elite girls’ race, Gabriella Tesoriero paced the Dragons with a time of 20:12, followed by Carmela Bell in 20:13. Kylee Cusick (20:27), Lauren Sims (20:50) and Sophia Wilwayco (20:50.5) rounded out the scoring.

On the boys side, Michael Kovach led the way with a time of 16:24, followed by Hudson Lowry (16:31), John Adam Kieda (16:32), Michael Fuller (16:34) and Caleb Lo (16:37).

In the varsity open races, Lucy Pettigrew was the top Dragon runner in the girls’ competition, crossing the finish line in 21:04. Bella Severson (21:08) was next, followed by Grace McIlvain (21:36), Grace Rhoten (21:42) and Mia Dunagan (22:06). The boys were led by Claudio Auns (17:24), followed by Aidan Bedwell (17:48), Gavin Folkerts (18:23), Graysen Schick (18:27) and Jason McCarthy (18:34).

In elite junior varsity action, Isabella DiVincenzo led the girls with a time of 23:11, followed by Gwendolyn Asher (23:14), Annalise Bell (23:15), Quinn Salstrand (23:28) and Callie Furlich (23:34). In the boys’ race, Madhavan Bosemani paced Carroll with a time of 19:01, followed by Damian Garza (19:55), Jack Swadish (20:00), Armaan Dhillon (20:01) and Robert Hargrave (20:04).

The Dragons return to action on Saturday, Sept. 16. The varsity will travel to Irvine, Ca., to compete in the Woodbridge XC Classic, while the junior varsity will run in the Paschal Invitational in Fort Worth.

Dragon Boys Victorious at Southlake Invitational

Walsh Wins Girls’ Gold Medal for Second Consecutive Year

 

Southlake, TX – The Southlake Carroll boys cross country team began its quest for a fifth consecutive state title with a dominating victory at the Southlake Invitational at Bob Jones Park on Saturday morning. The girls’ team, the reigning state runner-up, finished second, falling by just two points to Lucas Lovejoy.

“This was a great way to start the season,” Head Coach Justin Leonard said. “There’s always a lot of excitement for the opening meet, especially when it’s on your home course. Our young men and women handled their emotions – and the heat – well and ran hard.”

In the varsity elite boys’ race, sophomore Caden Leonard finished second in 14:32, leading Carroll to an 88-point victory over second-place McKinney Boyd. Junior Blake Bullard finished fourth with a time of 14:34, followed by seniors Jude Alvarez (12th, 14:51), Ryan Van De Berghe (14th, 14:53) and Zach Troutman (15th, 14:54).

In the varsity elite girls’ race, senior Alexandra Walsh finished first for the second year in a row (17:01), nearly leading the Dragons to a team victory. Junior Elizabeth Smits finished third in 17:25, followed by sophomore Vanessa Vezga (9th, 17:52), junior Sarayu Veluri (12th, 18:03) and senior Sylvia Schwedler (26th, 18:26).

In the varsity open races, junior Ryan Krasinski paced the Dragons in the boys’ competition, finishing 9th overall with a time of 16:21. He was followed by junior Jett Jones (23rd, 16:44), freshman Grant Norgart (26th, 16:47), sophomore Dylan Torres (30th, 16:52) and freshman Adhavan Palanivelrajan (35th, 16:56).

In the girls’ varsity open race, junior Katie Hurrell finished 8th in 19:47, followed by sophomore Lilah Gornell (20th, 20:22), freshmen Landry Lambert (22nd, 20:26) and Bella Severson (25th, 20:34), and junior Ashley Cusick (37th, 20:56).

In the JV two-mile races, junior Kelsey Walton led the girls with a 28th-place finish (12:27). Freshmen Quinn Salstrand (12:28) and Annalise Bell (12:32) rounded out the top three for the Dragons. In the boys’ race, sophomore Madhavan Bosemani paced Carroll with a 20th-place finish (10:12), followed by sophomore Armaan Dhillon (10:22) and freshman Colin Van De Berghe (10:29).

The Dragons return to action next Saturday, running in the Coach T Invitational at North Lakes Park in Denton.
