Dragons Sweep Elite Races at Southlake Invitational

 

Southlake, TX – The Southlake Carroll boys and girls cross country teams opened their season with dominating victories at the Southlake Invitational at Bob Jones Park on Saturday morning. Leading the way was junior Alexandra Walsh, who took home the individual gold medal in the varsity elite girls race, crossing the finish line in 17:05

“This was a great way to start the season,” head coach Justin Leonard said. “There’s always a lot of excitement for the opening meet, especially when it’s on your home course. Our young men and women handled their emotions well and ran hard.”

In the varsity elite boys race, senior Logan Cantu paced the three-time defending state champion Dragons with a fourth-overall finish (15:11), leading Carroll to a 57-point victory over second-place Coppell. Sophomore Blake Bullard finished eighth with a time of 15:23, followed by freshman Caden Leonard (12th, 15:29), senior Robert Freeman (18th, 15:40) and junior Zach Troutman (23rd, 15:46).

In the varsity elite girls race, Walsh’s first overall finish led the Dragons to a resounding 147-point win over runner-up Colleyville Heritage. Senior Ava Bushaw finished second in 17:25, followed by sophomore Elizabeth Smits (7th, 18:27), junior Sylvia Schwedler (8th, 18:32) and sophomore Gabriella Tesoriero (18th, 18:56).

In the varsity open races, junior Carter Haskell paced the Dragons in the boys competition, finishing eighth overall with a time of 16:56. He was followed by sophomores Jett Jones (28th, 17:32) and Ryan Krasinski (34th, 17:41). Junior Lauren Sims finished 11th on the girls side (20:43), followed by senior Sophia Medina (12th, 20:48) and junior Kylee Cusick (17th, 20:56).

In junior varsity action, freshman Emma Tomkins led the girls with a 26th-place finish (16:03). Junior Chloe Fisher (16:38) and freshman Lilah Gornell (18:02) rounded out the top three for the Dragons. In the boys race, sophomore Nikhel Kamalia paced Carroll with a 33rd-place finish (19:01), followed by sophomore Rohan Kumar (19:42) and freshman Michael Fuller (19:58).

The Dragons return to action next Saturday, running in the Coach T Invitational at North Lakes Park in Denton.
