We all know that firework shows are the place to be on the night of July 4th, but what should we do during the day? Most people have the day off from work, which means it's the perfect opportunity to attend a special event with friends and family. 

Here are some spectacular holiday parades and festivals scattered throughout the DFW area. Which ones will you check out on Wednesday? 

Park Cities July 4th Parade and Picnic 

For many years, locals in Highland Park and University Park have come together on the streets to enjoy a patriotic parade. The event will begin on Preston Road, then head east on University Boulevard to Goar Park. After you watch the parade go by, you can visit the park for music, games and food. The free fun begins at 9:00 AM, and there will be a family bicycle judging contest at 8:00 AM at the Park Cities YMCA. To learn more, visit this website. 

Lakewood 4th of July Parade 

Starting at 10:00 AM, this traditional Lakewood parade will pay homage to the heroes of America. Show up to walk with others who are celebrating America or watch from the sideline while sipping refreshments and listening to music. There will be awards for the most impressive participants! Lake Highlands 4th of July Parade and Carnival 

The Exchange Club of Lake Highlands is hosting a community event complete with a carnival and festive parade. Drop by to see decorated bikes, various parade floats, food, fun and so much more. The parade lineup beings at 8:00 AM at North Highlands Bible Church, and the actual event is free to attend from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. 

4th of July Yankee Doodle Parade in Denton 

The 20th Annual Liberty 5K and 1-Mile Walk will take place at 7:30 AM at the Denton Civic Center. Then, Downtown Denton will come alive at 9:00 AM for a free, family-friendly parade. There will also be a kid's carnival until 12:00 PM in the Civic Center, as well as a hot dog eating competition and other kinds of family fun. If you want to learn more, visit the event's website. 

Five on the Fourth at Klyde Warren Park 

This event is a fantastic way to begin your holiday celebrations. Show up at the park around 8:00 AM to participate in a run that's fit for the whole family. You can tackle the 5-mile run or 2-mile walk, and there are even races specifically for kids. Learn more by visiting this website. 

Flower Mound Independence Fest Children's Parade 

This year, a parade full of decorated bikes, strollers, wagons and tricycles will begin at the corner of Eaton and Timber Creek Road and progress to the LISD Administration Building. All kids and their parents are welcome to enjoy the parade, as well as various festive activities and live entertainment. The parade lineup begins at 9:30 AM. Click here to learn more. 

Independence Day Parade in Irving 

The first part of the Irving celebrations invites thousands of attendees to enjoy an award-winning parade and festival. From 9:00 AM to noon, head to the Irving Heritage District to watch a parade full of patriotic floats, costumes and vehicles. McKinney Red, White and BOOM! Classic Car, Truck and Cycle Show + Hometown Parade 

Historic Downtown McKinney is pulling out all the stops with a hometown parade at 10 AM, followed by a classic car, truck and cycle show and a pumping block party. After the festivities, you can check out all the great shopping and dining options located in the space. 

Old Fashioned Fourth at Dallas Heritage Village 

Grab your picnic basket and head to this historic event that highlights our nation's past on its birthday. There will be costumed Victorian characters strolling around, a stick pony race, a craft station and an All-Join-In-Parade at noon. Admission is $5 and free for everyone under the age of 12. Parade Down Parkway - Coppell 

This parade will travel from Samuel to Parkway Boulevard all the way to the town center of Coppell. Stake out a spot early to watch this parade from the sidelines, or go all out and find a way to participate in the parade. Trophy Club 4th of July Celebration 

Non-residents can get into this celebration for $10, but Trophy Club residents can attend for free! Come celebrate your red, white and blue roots while engaging in a full day of patriotic events.
