Carroll XC Races against National Powerhouses

Dragon Girls Finish Second; Boys Finish Third

 

NORCO, CA – Southlake Carroll’s top boys and girls cross country runners traveled to Southern California to compete against some of the top high school programs in the country at the three-mile Woodbridge XC Classic on Friday evening. Both teams impressed on the national stage – the girls finished second in the top “sweepstakes” division, while the boys came in third.

“Our young men and women faced some of the strongest high school cross country teams in the U.S. tonight, and they proved they could compete with the best of the best,” Southlake Carroll Head Coach Justin Leonard said. “They rose to the challenge and raced well.”

Junior Alexandra Walsh led the girls’ team with a time of 16:03, finishing fourth overall. Senior Ava Bushaw finished 15th in 16:20, followed by senior Audrey Dunn (26th, 16:42), junior Sylvia Schwedler (32nd, 16:47), sophomore Elizabeth Smits (51st, 17:10), senior Natalie Ng (73rd, 17:31) and sophomore Gabriella Tesoriero (118th, 18:04).

In the boys’ “sweepstakes” race, senior Logan Cantu led the way with a time of 14:20, finishing 20th overall. Junior Zach Troutman came in 42nd in 14:35, followed by freshman Caden Leonard (50th, 14:43), sophomore Alex Severson (59th, 14:45) and senior Robert Freeman (61st, 14:46). Senior David Fisher (92nd, 14:59) and sophomore Blake Bullard (129th, 15:21) rounded out the Dragons finishers.

In the “rated” competition, junior Jude Alvarez finished 12th overall with a time of 14:44, leading the Dragons to a first-place team finish. Senior Jack Litwin was next, finishing 20th with a time of 14:54, followed by senior Tyler Ortiz (40th, 15:08), juniors Ryan Van de Berghe (43rd, 15:11) and Brady Golomb (49th, 15:15), sophomore Griffin Cords (60th, 15:20) and senior Vivek Reddy (86th, 15:29).

On the girls’ side, sophomore Sarayu Veluri ran a 17:28, good for 16th place overall and leading the Dragon girls to a third-place team finish. Junior Charlotte Martin was next, finishing 25th in 17:45, followed by sophomore Ryann Flores (37th, 18:00), junior Julia Gassett (47th, 18:08) and senior Hannah McIlvain (48th, 18:10). Freshman Avery Anderson (75th, 18:34) and sophomore Mia Lay (103rd, 18:54) rounded out the Dragons finishers.

The Dragons’ top runners will return to action on Saturday, October 1, at the University of Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville.
