Dragon Boys Win Fifth Straight Regional Title

Girls finish second; both squads qualify for state meet

Lubbock, TX – The Southlake Carroll boys cross country team won its fifth consecutive Region 1-6A championship at Mae Simmons Park Monday morning, cruising past second-place Coppell by 76 points. The girls finished second to Flower Mound by a single point, and both Dragon teams earned berths in the state meet.

It marks the 26th consecutive year the girls have qualified for the state meet, and the 13th straight year for the boys. The boys have won back-to-back-to-back state titles.

“I’m really proud of our young men and women,” Head Coach Justin Leonard said. “This is always such a tough region, and our runners rose to the challenge. We had five of the top 10 boys finishers, and three of the top 10 girls. The boys are excited to have the opportunity to defend their state championship again, and the girls are looking forward to getting another shot at Flower Mound.”

In the varsity boys’ race, senior Logan Cantu finished second overall, leading the Dragons with a time of 15:21. Sophomore Blake Bullard finished fourth in 15:38, followed by junior Jude Alvarez in fifth (15:39), senior Robert Freeman in sixth (15:42) and freshman Caden Leonard in eighth (15:47). Junior Zach Troutman (17th, 16:07) and senior Tyler Ortiz (26th, 16:23) rounded out the Dragon competitors.

In the girls’ race, senior Ava Bushaw finished second overall with a time of 17:25. Junior Sylvia Schwedler finished seventh in 18:06, followed by senior Audrey Dunn (8th, 18:15), sophomore Elizabeth Smits (15th, 18:51) and sophomore Sarayu Veluri (24th, 19:09). Senior Natalie Ng (37th, 19:43) and sophomore Gabriella Tesoriero (46th, 19:55) were the Dragons’ final two finishers.

The 6A state championship meet will be held in Round Rock on Nov. 5.
