Lady Dragons Varsity Lacrosse Earn Dramatic 12-11 Upset Playoff Win

The Lady Dragon lacrosse team went on the road and earned a hard-fought playoff win against Highland Park last night at Highlander Stadium.

The Dragons trailed for most of the game to the highly talented Scots team.  The defense was challenged with keeping Highland Park off the scoreboard for the last 7:40 minutes of the game.

Emerson Bradley made a key interception that allowed Coach Faith Renner to take a time out with 4:29 remaining.  Avery Newell, off an assist by Cara Leahy then put the Dragons to within one at 11-10 with just 3:47 left.  Avery Newell scored the equalizer with just 2:16 left in the contest.

With just 1:24 remaining in the game, Taylor Walton put the Dragons into the lead, 12-11, for the very first time.  HP had one chance remaining and had possesion with 49 seconds left when Mimi Wassef intercepted a pass.  Highland Park was then called for a slashing penalty and the Lady Dragons were able to run out the remaining time.

The Dragons will advance to play ESD in the semifinals Saturday at Noon at Old Eagle Stadium in Allen.

In what can only be described as a total team effort, the Dragons were aided with some key saves from both goalies Caitlan Jones and Chloe Monroe and earlier goals from Cara Leahy (3) Mimi Wassef, Madelyn Murphy, Emily Courson, Caroline Pierett  and a goal and assist from Anna Martinko.
