Dragon Lacrosse Team Seeks to Return to Winning Ways, Hosting No. 1 ESD at 5:30 Dragon Stadium

Riding a three-game win streak, the Dragon High School Boys lacrosse team had momentum on their side as they face a stretch of critical games with a chance at the playoffs.  In a six-day period the Dragons had outscored Kingwood (Houston) 14-6, Plano 20-5 and Plano West 5-3, as they went on the road to face defending State Champion St. Marks.

The Dragons kept that momentum and gained a 2-0 lead with early goals from Senior Attackman Bryce Wasserman and Senior midfielder Connor Harryman.  St. Marks battled back to tie when Junior Midfielder Michael Cox put the Dragons back ahead 3 to 2.

Wasserman added another goal to extend the Dragon lead to 4 -2.  The Lions answered with three straight tallies when Wasserman completed his hat trick and tied the game at 5-5 halfway through the second period. St. Marks came right back and scored shortly thereafter to lead 6-5.

Dragon Head Coach Bart Sullivan, an All-Decade University of Denver Team selection, employs a physical man-to-man defensive scheme.  St. Marks Coach Francis Donald leveraged his team depth and countered with a variety of line rotations. Both coaches bring NCAA College coaching experience to the very competitive North Division.  Both defenses locked down and while play went end-to-end, no goals were allowed by either side for the rest of the half. St. Marks took a 6-5 lead into halftime.

The Lions started the second half with another goal to extend the lead to 7-5. Sophomore Midfielder Brody Danel, won possession and streaked down the right sideline on a breakaway, scoring the rare long-stick goal to bring the Dragons back to within 7-6. For the third time of the night, the Lions held a one-goal advantage as the quarter ended.

The Lions had two goals to start the fourth quarter and changed tactics. With a three-goal lead, they focused on long-possessions with the dual purpose of wearing down the Dragon defense while limiting offensive possessions for Southlake.  Michael Cox finally broke free for his second tally of the night to pull the Dragons to within 9-7 with 2:25 remaining.  St. Marks secured possession and effectively ran out the clock, securing their spot in the playoffs.

The Dragons have three District games remaining including hosting the current #1 state-ranked ESD on Monday, April 7 at Dragon Stadium.  NEW TIME = Varsity will play at 5:30 p.m. with the JV squad starting at 7:30 p.m.

The team will then head to Coppell on Friday, April 11 before ending the regular season by hosting their Senior Night game on Wednesday, April 16 against Allen.
