Five for Five!

Southlake Carroll Boys Win Fifth Consecutive State Championship

Round Rock, TX – The Southlake Carroll boys cross country team won its fifth consecutive 6A state title Saturday morning at Old Settlers Park, defeating runner-up Austin Vandegrift by 20 points. It is not only the Dragons’ fifth straight state championship, but also the 14th consecutive year the boys have finished either first or second at the state meet.

The girls squad finished runner-up to Flower Mound for the second straight year.

“Words cannot describe how proud I am of our young men and women,” Southlake Carroll Head Coach Justin Leonard said. “It takes tremendous year-round dedication to succeed at our sport, and five straight titles for the boys is a testament to just how hard they work every single day.

“Our girls work just as hard, and finishing second to an outstanding Flower Mound team is no small feat. Our ladies have qualified for the state meet 27 years in a row. That level of consistency is only reached by working hard day in and day out”

In the varsity boys’ race, freshman Caden Leonard won the individual state title with a time of 15:00. Junior Blake Bullard finished fourth in 15:09, followed by seniors Jude Alvarez (14th, 15:25), Zach Troutman (19th, 15:30) and Ryan Van De Berghe (28th, 15:44). Juniors Griffin Cords (41st, 15:53) and Alex Severson (54th, 16:00) rounded out the Dragon competitors.

Junior Elizabeth Smits was the top Dragon runner in the girls’ race, finishing 10th overall with a time of 17:50. Senior Alexandra Walsh was next (11th, 17:53), followed by senior Sylvia Schwedler (35th, 18:29), junior Sarayu Veluri (37th, 18:32) and senior Charlotte Martin (48th, 18:44). Sophomore Vanessa Vezga (55th, 18:52) and senior Julia Gassett (96th, 19:29) were the Dragons’ final two finishers.
