Dragon Boys Win Fourth Straight Regional Title

Girls finish second; both squads qualify for state meet

Lubbock, TX – The Southlake Carroll boys cross country team won its fourth consecutive Region 1-6A championship at Mae Simmons Park Monday morning, edging runner-up El Paso Eastwood for the second year in a row. The girls finished second to Flower Mound, also for the second consecutive year, and both Dragon teams earned berths in the state meet.

It marks the 25th consecutive year the girls have qualified for the state meet, and the 12th straight year for the boys. The boys have won back-to-back state titles.

“I’m really proud of our young men and women,” Head Coach Justin Leonard said. “The competition was steep out here today, and we’ll see some of these teams again at the state meet. The boys are excited to have the opportunity to defend their state championship, and the girls want to improve on their second-place finish from a year ago.”

In the varsity boys race, junior David Fisher finished 6th overall, leading the Dragons with a time of 15:55. Junior Robert Freeman finished 9th in 16:03, followed by fellow juniors Tyler Ortiz (18th, 16:19) and Hunter Hill (20th, 16:25), and sophomore Jude Alvarez (22nd, 16:29). Junior Logan Cantu (23rd, 16:31) and senior Welles McDevitt (35th, 16:48) rounded out the Dragon competitors.

Senior Kaylie Cox was the top Dragon runner in the girls race, finishing 9th overall with a time of 18:45. Junior Ava Bushaw finished 10th in 18:58, followed by sophomore Sylvia Schwedler (13th, 19:15), freshman Elizabeth Smits (24th, 19:38) and sophomore Alexandra Walsh (27th, 19:44). Juniors Natalie Ng (30th, 19:49) and Audrey Dunn (34th, 19:57) were the Dragons’ final two finishers.

The 6A state championship meet will be held in Round Rock on Nov. 6.
