Southlake Carroll Boys Win Third Consecutive State Championship

Round Rock, TX – The Southlake Carroll boys cross country team won its third consecutive 6A state title Saturday afternoon, defeating The Woodlands, Atascocita and 2020 runner-up El Paso Eastwood at Old Settlers Park. It is not only the Dragons’ third straight championship, but also the 12th consecutive year the boys have finished either first or second at the state meet.

The girls squad just missed the medal stand, finishing fourth. Flower Mound repeated as the 6A state champion, followed by Prosper and The Woodlands.

“Words cannot describe how proud I am of our young men and women,” Southlake Carroll Head Coach Justin Leonard said. “After graduating so many seniors last year, we asked a lot of our underclassmen to step up and take leadership roles. And all they did was lead us to a third straight boys state title and the 25th consecutive year for the girls qualifying for the state meet. I’m honored to be their coach.”

In the varsity boys race, junior David Fisher finished 9th overall, leading the Dragons with a time of 15:39. Sophomore Jude Alvarez finished 10th in 15:40, followed by juniors Robert Freeman (11th, 15:43), Hunter Hill (13th, 15:50) and Logan Cantu (21st, 15:54). Junior Tyler Ortiz (30th, 16:02) and senior Welles McDevitt (51st, 16:21) rounded out the Dragon competitors.

Senior Kaylie Cox was the top Dragon runner in the girls race, finishing 14th overall with a time of 18:20. Sophomore Sylvia Schwedler was next (20th, 18:33), followed by freshman Elizabeth Smits (24th, 18:40), junior Ava Bushaw (27th, 18:49) and sophomore Alexandra Walsh (43rd, 19:16). Juniors Natalie Ng (49th, 19:21) and Audrey Dunn (56th, 19:27) were the Dragons’ final two finishers.
