Four for Four!

Southlake Carroll Boys Win Fourth Consecutive State Championship

Round Rock, TX – The Southlake Carroll boys cross country team won its fourth consecutive 6A state title Friday morning at Old Settlers Park, defeating runner-up Austin Vandegrift by 19 points. It is not only the Dragons’ fourth straight state championship, but also the 13th consecutive year the boys have finished either first or second at the state meet.

The girls squad finished a close second to Flower Mound, which won the state championship for the third consecutive year.

“Words cannot describe how proud I am of our young men and women,” Southlake Carroll Head Coach Justin Leonard said. “It takes year-round dedication to succeed at our sport, and four straight titles for the boys is a testament to just how hard they work every single day.

“Our girls work just as hard, and finishing second to a tremendous Flower Mound squad is no small feat. Our ladies have qualified for the state meet 26 years in a row. That level of consistency is only reached by working hard day in and day out.”

In the boys’ race, freshman Caden Leonard finished 5th overall, leading the Dragons with a time of 15:56. Junior Jude Alvarez finished 8th in 15:59, followed by senior Logan Cantu (13th, 16:08), sophomore Blake Bullard (17th, 16:16) and senior Robert Freeman (19th, 16:19). Junior Zach Troutman (22nd, 16:21) and senior Tyler Ortiz (55th, 16:58) rounded out the Dragon competitors.

Senior Ava Bushaw was the top Dragon runner in the girls’ race, finishing 4th overall with a time of 17:58. Junior Sylvia Schwedler was next (6th, 18:16), followed by senior Audrey Dunn (7th, 18:36), sophomore Elizabeth Smits (16th, 18:56) and junior Alexandra Walsh (18th, 18:58). Sophomore Sarayu Veluri (25th, 19:24) and senior Natalie Ng (41st, 19:56) were the Dragons’ final two finishers.
