Varsity Elite & Varsity Dragon Teams Compete in California

Elite Varsity Girls Finish 4rd & Boys Take 5th

Norco, CA  (September 16, 2017) – The top runners of the Southlake Carroll Cross Country teams traveled to Norco, CA to compete at the 37th Annual Woodbridge Cross Country Classic, a fast 3-mile race held under the lights at night. Both the boys and girl’s teams faced tough competition from around the country and came away with some outstanding performances including a 1st place finish in the girls’ varsity race.

Head Coach Justin Leonard commented, “Our teams ran some great races against some of the toughest competition in the nation. All of our teams stepped up and represented our program well in California. It was a great weekend and hopefully this will help propel our runners into the rest of the season."

The Elite Varsity Dragon girls took an impressive 4rd place in California and were led by senior Cate Tracht who captured 21st place with a time of 16:43.3.  Next in line for the Dragons was Sofia Santamaria with a 41st place finish (17:13.2), Sarah McCabe came in next in 56th place (17:30.9), Lauren Esparza was 72nd (17:53.2) and Cristina Canal rounded out the scoring positions with a 75rd place (17:54.3) finish. Angie Riera (18.08.9) and Kate Reppeto (18:35.7) completed the elite 7 runners for the Dragon girls’ team. 

The Elite Varsity Dragon boys faced tough competition and came away with a 5th place finish led by senior Enzo Mortimer in 37th place (14:47.8).  Right behind him in 38th place was Jack Meyers (14:48.0).  Next to cross the line for the Dragons was Jackson Felkins in 42nd place (14:49.9), Drew Bliss in 67th place (14:59.1) and rounding out the boys scoring positions was Vishnu Nair in 82nd (15:08.0).  Completing the boy’s elite team were Juan Arcila in 93rd (15:16.9) and Connor Rutledge in 112th (15:23.9).

The Varsity Dragon girls took 1st place and were led by Sophomore Jenna Holland coming in 10th (17:30), Lydia Lo finished right behind in 14th (17:32), Payton Wichman in 34th (18:10), Rima Toure in 43rd (18:20) and Tatum Foreman in 48th (18:23).  Completing the girls’ team was Vy Nguyen in 63rd (18:35) and Shreya Veeravelli in 65th (18:37). 

The Dragon Varsity boys came away with a 9th place finish and were led by Nate Lannen in 32nd (15:12), followed by Everrett Kolto in 56th (15:28), Lucas Levant in 62nd (15:31), Noah Castro in 63rd (15:32) and Nick Arriaza in 77th (15:38).  Rounding out the boy’s team was Antonio Florcruz in 86th (15:42) and Henry Gardner in 141st (16:16).  

The Elite and Varsity Dragons will use this next week off to train hard and prepare for the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, AR on September 30th.  The JV teams will split up next week and compete in Corpus Christi, TX at the Islander Splash and in Grapevine, TX at the Coppell Invitational.

Southlake, TX (September 9, 2017) – The 13th Annual Southlake Invitational was held Saturday at Bob Jones Park in Southlake, Texas. This has become one of the state’s supreme races, hosting teams from around the state as well as teams from California, Oklahoma and Louisiana.  Some of Carroll’s top boys and girls had a scheduled week off and did not compete. Varsity Girls took 10th place and Varsity Boys took 12th.

Carroll Cross Country Head Coach Justin Leonard said, “We would like to thank all of our volunteers/parents for helping us put on the Southlake Carroll XC Invite. We are proud of the way our kids competed in the races.  We were able to give our younger runners an opportunity to run in the varsity races so they could gain some much needed experience.  We are looking forward to the rest of the season.” 

Dragon Varsity Girls Take 10th Place

 The Varsity Girls were led by Junior Shreya Veeravelli coming in 46th overall (19:29), next was Sophomore Katherine McElaney in 55th (19:40), then Juniors Madalyn Wardin in 58th (19:47), Audrey Kwentus in 66th (19:53) and rounding out the top 5 was Junior Sarah Creech in 71st (19:56).  There were a total of 253 varsity girls running.

 Dragon Varsity Boys Take 12th Place

 The Varsity Boys team took 12th, led by  Junior Nick Arriaza in 64th with a time of 16.33, followed by Senior Chris Duffy, 74th (16:41), Junior Duncan Brown, 84th (16:46), Sophmore Tim McElaney, 88th (16:48), and Junior Bradley Heidebrecht taking 102nd place (16:58) to complete the top five Carroll runners.  There were 295 varsity boys competing.

 JV Dragon Girls Take 2nd Place and the JV Boys take 9th Place

 The JV girl’s team was led by Caitlyn Midkiff finishing in 7th place overall with a time of 20:30.  Leading for the JV boys’ was Brett Gilley finishing 29th overall (17:44).  There were 379 girls competing and 516 boys in the JV races.

 

The Carroll Cross Country Varsity Teams will be competing at the Woodbridge XC Classic in Irvine, CA next Saturday.

Denton, Texas (September 2, 2017) – The Southlake Carroll Cross Country teams ran away with big wins at the Marcus I Invitational meet in Denton’s North Lakes Park on Saturday with 5 of the 8 Southlake teams placing 1st.  All teams stepped up to meet the challenge of their first 5k of the season. Between the boys and girls teams, 15 finished as National Elites*.

Coach Justin Leonard commented, "We are extremely proud of the effort our kids put into all the races at the Marcus 1 invite.  We ran in a total of 8 races and our kids competed really well. We told our runners their performances in the Marcus meet are a reflection of the amount of work they put in over the summer.  Now it's up to them to progress from this point on leading into the district, regional & state meet.  District & State medals weren't given out yesterday."

The Dragons took 1st place in the Varsity Boys Elite race with Jackson Felkins leading the team taking 5th overall with a time of 15:48, followed by Jack Meyers grabbing 9th place at 15:52, Connor Rutledge in 10th place running 15:53, Enzo Mortimer placing 14th coming in at 16:01 and Juan Arcila in 15th at 16:05 to finish out the top five.

The Varstiy Boys Open team also had an impressive 1st place finish with a low score of 25  points.  Noah Castro took 1st for the Dragons and 3rd overall with a time of 16:34.  Nate Lannen was next to cross the line with a 4th place finish and a time of 16:36, followed by Everett Kolto in 5th at 16:41, then Antonio Florcruz taking 6th with a 16:46 and Nick Arriaza finishing out the top 5 coming in 7th with a time of 16:46.

The Varsity Girls Elite team had an impressive showing as well coming in 2nd place led by Cate Tracht with a 6th place finish and a time of 18:12. Next was Sofia Santamaria taking 20th place running a 18:38, Angie Riera placed 30th with an 19:05, Christina Canal was 32nd  running a 19:09 and Sarah McCabe in 33rd place with a 19:10 to round out the top 5 scoring positions.

The Varsity Girls Open team took 1st and scored just 34 points and was led by Rima Toure taking 3rd place with a time of 19:28, followed by Vy Nguyen taking 6th running a 20:00, Payton Wichman was right behind in 7th place running a 20:00, Jenna Holland was right behind that in 8th place with a 20:00 and Tatum Foreman rounded out the top 5 with a 10th place finish at 20:16.

 Southlake Carroll also dominated the JV Elite division, taking 1st place for both boys and girls. The boys scored a low 41 points while the girls scored just 25 points, taking the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 9th place spots.

The Dragon runners will be hosting the Southlake Invitational meet next Saturday, September 9th at Bob Jones Park in Southlake.

Carrollton Texas and Dallas Texas (August 25th and August 26th) – The varsity Dragons came away big nabbing 1st place finishes in each of their races to kick off the season competing in the Friday Nite Hawk Invite in Carrollton, TX.  The JV Dragons competed in their first meet of the season in Dallas at the Greenhill Six Mile Relays posting some solid performances.

 

Friday Nite Hawk Invite - Varsity

 

The Carroll Boys Elite Varsity A team took 1st place in this fast 2-mile race with Connor Rutledge leading the team followed by Juan Arcila, Vishnu Nair, Drew Bliss and Jackson Felkins.  The Boys Elite Varsity B team also won top honors placing 1st in their race and earning an incredible perfect score of 15 points.  Jack Meyers led his team followed by Kieran Beirne, Antonio Flocruz, Everrett Kolto and Noah Castro. 

 

The Girls Elite Varsity A team posted similarly impressive results in their 2-mile race placing 1st with Cate Tracht leading her team followed by Sofia Santamaria, Sarah McCabe, Angie Riera and Lydia Lo.  The Girls Elite Varsity B team, also placing 1st posting a low total score of 30, was led by Jenna Holland, followed by Rima Toure, Shreya Veeravelli, Payton Wichman and Vy Nguyen.

 

Head Cross Country Coach Justin Leonard commented, “Tonight was a fun atmosphere for our teams to kick start our season.  We originally planned on running in The Woodlands but due to Hurricane Harvey we were able to compete in Hawk Friday night invite.  It was a quality field and I believe our teams competed well.  We have a long season ahead of us and we will continue focusing on running fast when it matters.”

 

Greenhill Six-Mile Relay– JV

 

Southlake Carroll had 27 JV teams competing in the 33rd Annual Greenhill Six-Mile Relay with 3 medal finishing teams.  The JV teams competed in both the JV A and B races. 

 

“The Greenhill 6-mile relay provided our runners with the opportunity to finally compete against other opponents.  This is a great meet for our runners new to the program as it is an introduction into competitive racing.  We use this meet to propel us into next week's Marcus 1 invite.  We are looking forward to a fun season", said Coach Leonard.
