Although unable to hold its annual signature DPS Appreciation Day due to COVID, the Rotary Club of Southlake managed to raise (to date) almost $17,250 through our sponsors (listed below), enabling the Club to confer scholarships to college-bound children of our police officers and firefighters as well as continue integral services we offer the community! We are FULL-SPEED to Christmas!  This year, finding a great and last-minute gift does not require standing in long lines at the mall!  We have the perfect solution – give the gift of great recipes!  Freedom Hospice has published a wonderful cookbook full of 503 family recipes from staff, patient families, volunteers, and friends of the agency.

It is beautifully bound and will make a great gift for anyone who enjoys good and home-style recipes!  The proceeds from sales will go to provide last wishes as well as other extras for our patients and their families!  So, you will actually be giving 2 gifts with each purchase – one for your recipient and one that will positively impact the life of terminally ill patients!  What better gift could there be?

Please see the attached flyer for more information.  Southlake Rotarian Jon Glover, the Manager of Benevolent Services at Freedom Hospice, is happy to deliver them to your home or office, or if you prefer, ship them to you or your recipients.

You can complete the order form attached to the flyer and e-mail back to Jon Glover, or just e-mail me the number you wish to purchase.  We appreciate your support of this worthy cause!

Kudos and enormous thanks to the Southlake Rotarians who participated in the annual Salvation Army’s “Kettle Campaign,”/bell ringing on December 5th and December 12th!

Major David A. Leonard of the Salvation Army reported that our Club/bell ringers raised $856.28 on December 5th, the largest single kettle income for that day, also surpassing any single kettle income day thus far this year. In large part, we believe Jon Glover aka Santa Claus had a lot to do with that overflowing kettle!  The kids loved that Santa appeared in front of Hobby Lobby in Southlake! We are looking forward to hearing from Major Leonard on the December 12th kettle income!

The Red Kettle Campaign — which runs from Thanksgiving to Christmas — typically accounts for about one-third of the total amount of money raised by the Salvation Army in an entire year.

This year was a bit different from others in that volunteers wore masks and practiced social distancing.  And, an alternative to cash or coins were offered, with donors encouraged to use QR codes, which were placed on the kettles. The code can be scanned using the camera on your phone, which takes you to a site to make a contactless donation to the Salvation Army through Apple Pay or Google Pay.

For those who have a volunteer heart, you can also be a bell ringer from home! If you go to virtualredkettlentx.org, you can host a virtual kettle and share across social media to raise money. Thank you so much, Southlake Rotarians, for helping put this great team of volunteers together and helping the Salvation Army meet the needs of our community.

The Rotary Club of Southlake, “people of action,” cheerfully participated in several service projects in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

First, our Club stepped up to the call when the Presbyterian Night Shelter had to suspend volunteer services and were working with a skeleton crew to limit exposure to guests, staff and volunteers.  The Shelter was in desperate need for sandwiches to pass out to the homeless.  So, our “People of Action,” answered that call, making 100’s of sandwiches for several weeks.

Additionally, our club donated $800 to the North Texas Food Bank, and $800 to Community Storehouse to help them replenish their supplies for assisting those in need.

The Southlake Rotary Club also participated in our Districts Rise event and donated $2200, which was matched by the District 5790, making our club’s donation $4400.00.  A BIG “thank you” to Southlake Rotarian & Past President, Marshall Ryan, for his challenge in matching our members total donations up to $1000!!!!  We might be small, but we are MIGHTY!!!!! #rotaryconnectstheworld #wearerotary #peopleofaction #southlakerotaryclub
