3 Ways Preschoolers Excel with Nature Education

1. Natural play encourages teamwork

Children work together to build forts, move logs to search for insects, amongst other things. Studies have shown that children become more social when they are engaged in this type of play. The development of social skills like these is paramount for kindergarten readiness.

2. Nature education improves cognitive ability

Nature immersion programs benefit children mentally, physically, and emotionally. Children’s cognitive abilities, focus, and attention improve after contact with nature, even in children with ADHD. Students with exposure to environmental education develop a lasting understanding of science. Children also gain improved problem solving abilities and an increased motivation to learn. Children who have participated in this type of education score higher on standardized tests in reading, listening, math, writing, and critical thinking.

3. Children who play outdoors are more active

Children who spend more time outdoors are more physically active, have improved motor skills and are less likely to struggle with obesity. Children enrolled in outdoor education programs show improvements in self-esteem and confidence, and a reduction in behavior problems.

The Bob Jones Nature Center’s Pathfinders Nature Preschool program, as in many other nature education programs, provides abundant time for the relaxed, uninterrupted, and unstructured play that children need to succeed. Perhaps the most important aspect of Forest School is that it promotes joyfulness and a sense of well-being.

CROSS TIMBERS FOREST PRESCHOOL, Fall Semester

Nature immersion outdoor preschool classes in the Cross Timbers Ecosysyem:

The Bob Jones Nature Center new and enhanced Cross Timbers Forest Preschool program is based on European-style Forest Schools. Children, aged 3-5 years old, will explore nature through hands-on activities, nature lessons, music, stories, hikes, and crafts. At the Bob Jones Nature Center, we conduct our classes based on the research that natural environments inspire more creative play, improved concentration, teamwork, cooperation, and problem solving. The Cross Timbers Ecosystem provides the ideal outdoor classroom for your children to grow and begin to understand how humans, their development, and the natural world are integrally connected.

Many of us know intuitively that children should spend time engaged outdoors and there is ample scientific research which confirms our intuition. Course topics are carefully chosen to allow children to experience the Cross Timbers flora and fauna at their most active and interesting times during their life cycle.

A healthy, organic snack will be provided during the class. Please wear closed toed shoes, clothing appropriate for outdoor weather, and bring a water bottle. *Children must be potty independent. Want to send more than one child? Receive a 10% sibling discount.

What Does Playing Outside Help My Child Learn?

Creative outdoor play is a fantastic way for children to learn! The beauty of using natural objects in play is that children need to use verbal skills to communicate the meaning and purpose of an object to each other. A stick, for example becomes a walkie-talkie, an animal, or a fishing pole during playtime. Children invent more creative plot lines in play where they are not surrounded by toys with a predetermined use. In this way, outdoor play is helps children develop their imagination and creativity.

Natural play also encourages teamwork. Children work together to build forts, move logs to search for insects, amongst other things. Studies have shown that children become more social when they are engaged in this type of play. The development of social skills like these is paramount for kindergarten readiness.

What is a Nature Preschool?

A nature preschool provides children with the opportunity to spend time immersed in nature, playing and learning in local untamed areas where they can play, explore and experience natural systems and materials found there. Engaged outside in all types of weather, children and educators investigate natural phenomena and learn about the place in which they live.

Nature immersion schools are child-centered, curiosity-driven, and place-based. Children study local ecosystems, plants and animals by means of direct, hands-on experiences. Teachers present mini-lessons as children show interest in learning more about a topic. Using inquiry-based teaching styles, teachers prompt children to ask why and foster the development of the child’s own critical thinking skills. Children spend a large portion of class time engaged in valuable unstructured play. Many of us know intuitively that children should spend time engaged outdoors.

Pamela Muller’s Story

Southlake Resident and Previous City Council Member’s Account of the Bob Jones Nature Center

In the late 1980s, Rosemary Hutchinson, who was educating children on Southlake nature in her school Camp Summer Oaks approached me, as a Southlake council member, to consider a nature center. We did not have the resources at the time, being a small town of just 5,000 citizens and having a budget deficit of $500,000.

It was impossible to start.

When I was re-elected in the mid-90s I had not forgotten the need for a nature center. As many of us remember, the city we grew up in is now covered in cement. Southlake residents like you and I had the vision to preserve an area of the Cross Timbers to show our children and future generations.

With the land secured for a large nature preserve, I made the suggestion to name the land after Bob Jones, who born a slave in 1850, became a prosperous landowner in the Roanoke-Southlake area and a well-respected rancher and family man. I felt it was a perfect way to honor the brilliant man whose industry brought the surrounding communities together.

My fellow council members agreed, and I made the motion to form Bob Jones preserve. Now a piece of Southlake history is showcased in the wilderness of our most beautiful town.

However, the fight for preservation is not over yet - despite being a Southlake park, the Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve is managed as a 501(3)(c) nonprofit organization. That means this unique Texas treasure relies of nature lovers and history buffs like you to support our trails, native pollinator garden and many educational programs.

Show your love for Southlake by making a tax-deductible donation today!

Bruce Rosenstiel

Instructor

Bruce Rosenstiel was drawn to photography by his fascination with wildlife and world cultures. He enjoys photographing all manner of flora and fauna to reveal the extraordinary, and often unseen, diversity and beauty of nature.

Likewise, Bruce’s cultural portraits seek to make the foreign accessible by diffusing barriers of difference, creating a visual language of images that focuses on themes of universal human experience: work, play, worship, sorrow, joy.

Bruce’s Small World is dedicated to fostering environmental stewardship and cross-cultural understanding, by highlighting the bonds and behaviors between species and across communities, communicating through images when there is no shared spoken language.

Since 2009, he has taught classes through the Southlake and Grapevine, Texas Parks and Recreation departments. He currently teaches introductory and intermediate photography and Adobe Lightroom to adults of all ages.

He and his wife have co-lead Culture and Photography Tours to Oaxaca, Mexico and Peru.  Beginning in 2015, Bruce has lead photographic tours to Zimbabwe for Sikeleli Safaris.

His work has appeared in many publications and websites and has been selected for many juried exhibits.
